Till 1996, HCPCS was optional but after the passage of the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the government had made the use of HCPCS mandatory in certain cases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The HCPCS has divided the codes into two levels:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Level I: &#8211; Identical to CPT codes.<\/li>\n<li>Level II: &#8211; To represent non-physician services like medical equipment, wheelchair, ambulance ride, and other medical services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">HCPCS Level II codes or better known as J-codes are represented in the alphanumeric pattern.
